Yorkshire Status: Extinct

We just have two records of this species. The first is from H.T. Stainton's A Manual of British Butterflies and Moths in 1859 which mentions "York" as location. The second is in Porritt's 1883 list and simply says "Sheffield" (Arthur Doncaster). Unfortunately neither of these can be ascribed to a vice-county, and the Sheffield record might not be in Watsonian Yorkshire. The dots on the maps therefore are approximations. These are the most northerly records of this southern species, though there are possible records from Cumbria which require confirmation. This is a moth of hedgerows and woodland edges; the larvae feeding on field maple. It is unlikely that it will be refound in Yorkshire. If you are lucky enough to bump into it, it is an attractive and distinctive moth - for a Gelechiid.
