Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

This species was known to Porritt from Redcar, Saltburn and Huddersfield, and he noted that it "abounds in the woods and moorland hillside overhanging Greenfield railway station". It has always been a rather local moth, and the majority of our records are from limestone areas of the western Dales, especially the Ingleborough area. The Gelechiid web site tells us that in northern England it is "locally common on a west-facing steep rocky slope with a good range of short lightly grazed herbaceous plants and extensive areas of Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus (springy turf-moss)," which seems to fit in with many of our records. Although there are several old records from VC62, it has not been seen there since the 1980s. It has never been encountered in VC61. It is not the easiest species to identify, and usually the safest option is dissection. The forewing of the male is smooth, glossy and greyish-brown, and it could be confused with greyish forms of terrella. Females are more pale ochreous in colour.
