Yorkshire Status: Common resident.

This is a common species across the county wherever roses grow, in particular dog rose, Rosa canina. It is much less common on garden roses though we do see occasional records. A typical mine is a clear corridor, often with a hairpin turn, the section before the turn often following the leaf margin. The first section of the mine is entirely filled with greyish green frass which then abruptly changes to more variable black frass which is sometimes coiled and always leaves a clear zone at either side. The other common leaf miner on rose, Ectoedemia angulifasciella is quite different as the early gallery is extremely contorted. The main confusion species is the much less common Stigmella centifoliella which has a narrow frass line which is never coiled. This species needs breeding out to identify, as very occasionally anomalella can make a mine very like centifoliella - so the rule is, if it looks like anomalella it is, but if it looks like centifolilella, be very cautious!
