Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

This is one of the two hazel feeding Stigmella species and in most of the county is the less common of the two. There are two main ways to tell it apart from S. microtheriella which forms similar mines:
1. Look at the first part of the mine. The early gallery is filled with greenish frass, in contrast with microtheriella where the early part of the mine has a very thin frass line leaving clear margins.
2. Look again at the first part of the mine where the egg is laid. S. floslactella lays its egg close to to a vein axil whereas S. microtheriella lays its egg against a vein, but not in a vein axil.
There are other differences - S. microtheriella larvae mine venter upwards and usually leave the mine at the lower surface. S. floslactella larvae mine venter downwards and leave the mine at the upper surface. The mine of floslactella is not angular and is independent of the leaf venation compared with microtheriella where the mine often follows the veins, being often quite angular with long straight sections. Both of these species also feed on hornbeam.
